German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) said that the United States’ and Israel’s attack on Iran cannot be defended on the basis of international law. She told the news portal T‑Online that the concept of self‑defence has not yet been proven by international‑law scholars.
“In the long run, the right of the stronger does not help us” she told T‑Online. “As justice minister I am clear that our goal must and will remain to strengthen the rule of law”.
Hubig added that the mullah regime has inflicted decades of terror, repression and injustice upon the Iranian people. Many hoped for the regime’s fall and for freedom, and she stressed that international‑law norms-prohibitions on the use of force, territorial integrity and the political sovereignty of states-must be respected.
Diplomacy, she emphasized, is always preferable to bombing. “In war innocent people always suffer” Hubig said. “A wider conflagration in the region must be avoided at all costs”. “That is why I point out again: international law represents the progress of the twentieth century. A rules‑based world is, in the long run, a more peaceful world”.
