Omid Nouripour, the deputy chair of the German Bundestag and a member of the Greens, called for new sanctions against the Iranian regime, insisting that Germany should act now. Speaking to the news magazine Politico, he listed measures that go beyond simply adding the regime to a sanctions list. He urged the freezing of private assets held by regime elites in Europe and said that officials owning wealth on the continent must be targeted.
Nouripour criticized the lack of decisive actions to date. He noted that a ban on the activity of Iranian representatives operating in Germany is still missing, and that it is essential for these individuals to see that their work does not remain consequence‑free. He suggested that bringing charges by the federal prosecutor’s office could serve as a powerful signal.
When referring to the day’s diplomatic talks in Geneva between Washington and Tehran, Nouripour expressed skepticism. “There is a possibility of reaching an agreement” he said, but added that negotiations are only focused on uranium enrichment while the regime has a history of fraud and cannot be trusted.
He warned that any agreement must not overlook other critical issues. “We are talking about massive crimes against humanity this year” Nouripour said. “If the talks result only in an atomic deal that excludes repression and regional destabilisation, that would be the worst case”.
