National Maritime Conference Kicks Off With Political Leaders and Business Elite

On Wednesday, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accompanied by Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (both from the CDU party), opened the 14th National Maritime Conference in Emden. The gathering, which serves the maritime industry in Germany, was expected to draw approximately 800 attendees from business, politics, and professional associations.

According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the conference’s main focus areas include securing Europe’s competitive edge, strengthening maritime security, and making targeted investments in future “Made in Germany” technologies. On the occasion, the federal government released an action plan detailing central measures intended to boost the maritime sector.

Minister Reiche emphasized the critical importance of maritime trade for Germany’s industrial foundation, exports, and overall security. She pointed out that the economy cannot function without stable supply chains and safe sea routes, stressing the need for both a strong maritime infrastructure and the integration of modern technologies. She noted that the conference brings together the necessary stakeholders to work on these pivotal issues.

Furthermore, Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder highlighted the inherent vulnerabilities of the maritime economy, citing concerns such as those related to the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed the absolute necessity of maintaining free and safe shipping passages, alongside promoting fair, transparent, and standardized competitive conditions across the industry.
