In Mexico, the killing of a powerful drug boss sparked widespread violence. Mexican security forces eliminated the cartel leader known as “El Mencho” of the CJNG during an operation in the western state of Jalisco. The cartel retaliated with large‑scale road blockades. Vehicles burned in almost a dozen states on Sunday, and Guadalajara, the state’s capital, fell into a ghost‑town atmosphere as residents fled for safety.
The cartel boss had been wounded during a raid in the town of Tapalpa and later died while being transported to Mexico City. Jalisco is the stronghold of the CJNG, which is notorious for shipping large quantities of fentanyl and other drugs into the United States. According to officials, U.S. intelligence supported the Mexican authorities in the operation.
