CDU Continues Party Congress in Stuttgart as Friedrich Merz Reconfirmed as Leader

The CDU is continuing its federal convention in Stuttgart on Saturday, following a day in which party leader Friedrich Merz was confirmed in office. The Chancellor garnered 91.2 % approval in the most recent election held on Friday evening; his support was 89.8 % in 2024 and 94.6 % in the first 2022 election, which was conducted online.

Among the items on the agenda is a proposal from the state association of Schleswig‑Holstein to set a minimum age of 16 for using social‑media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, coupled with mandatory age verification. CDU leader Merz has recently expressed support for this initiative.

The Women’s Union and the Business and Economic Union have tabled a separate request for nationwide rules governing smartphone use in schools. They seek to create protective zones covering classes up to the 10th grade, in which private use of digital devices is prohibited during lessons and recess. The proposal commission recommends that delegates approve the measure.

Another submission from the Business and Economic Union calls for ending the practice of telephone‑issued medical certificates, arguing it leads to higher absenteeism. The SPD has already opposed this change. A proposal to introduce a sugar tax on high‑sugar drinks is also on the table, but the commission advises against it.

The convention will conclude with a speech by CSU chief Markus Söder.
