On the 70th anniversary of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Green Party representatives have increased their demands for the federal government to reform German intelligence agencies. Konstantin von Notz, the Green Deputy Group Leader, stated that intelligence services require political clarity and support to perform their vital work during an “extremely volatile geopolitical time”.
The Green politician, who also serves as Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Control Panel, criticized the government for failing to provide this support. He argued that the services urgently need a modern and constitutionally sound framework for their daily operations. Von Notz stressed that, as of today, parliament has received no reform proposals for amending either the BND or the BfV laws, calling the situation a “massive security policy oversight”.
According to the Green MP, reform is not only long overdue but is also constitutionally mandatory. He emphasized that a capable foreign intelligence service is of “elevated importance” for the security of the nation.
