Wolfgang Ischinger Calls for Increased Pressure on Russia After Munich Security Conference

The chair of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Wolfgang Ischinger, called for stronger pressure on Moscow at the conference’s conclusion. “I believe that, as trans‑Atlantic partners, we can exert pressure on Russia” he said in his closing remarks on Sunday.
He added that this is “urgently necessary”. “We must supply Ukraine with the weapons it needs, certainly more air‑defence systems. We need coordinated, tougher sanctions against Russia, including sanctions from the United States”.
Ischinger also noted that even more comprehensive European sanctions are possible. Furthermore, there are options that have not yet been fully implemented, which could raise the costs for Russia if it continues the war.
Regarding his own future, Ischinger stated that former NATO secretary‑general and current Norwegian finance minister Jens Stoltenberg will succeed him as soon as he “believes he can actually do it”. Until then, he will remain chair of the Munich Security Conference.
