According to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), distinct gender differences persist in vocational career choices across Germany. In terms of the dual vocational system, significantly more men than women are currently undertaking new training apprenticeships. For the year 2024, among the approximately 475,100 people who signed new training contracts in Germany, almost two-thirds (63.8%) were male.
When examining the most popular training paths, women’s top choice was the role of Medical Assistant, accounting for 9.4 percent of all newly completed training contracts. Following this, the Clerk for Office Management ranked second with 8.8 percent. Third in the rankings for female trainees was the Dental Assistant profession, making up 7.5 percent.
For male trainees, the leading profession in 2024 was Automotive Mechatronics Technician, with 7.5 percent of new contracts. Second place went to the IT Specialist (Fachinformatiker), chosen by 5.0 percent of male apprentices. Rounding out the top three spots for men was the Electronics Technician profession, which accounted for 4.6 percent.
