Montenegro begins spying investigations

The authorities in Montenegro have started investigations against several people accused of espionage, the Office of the Chief Prosecutor has announced.

Security agencies in Montenegro have arrested six Russian diplomats, 30 Russian citizens with temporary residence permits and two Montenegrin citizens on suspicion of espionage.

The spokesperson of the Office of the Chief Prosecutor in Montenegro, Vukas Radonjic, said that the police raided several apartments to look for evidence of espionage.

Radonjic emphasized that after the raids, “it will be determined who will be charged and arrested”, without specifying how many suspects were interrogated.

Montenegro is a member of NATO and a candidate for membership in the European Union.

It has also joined international sanctions against Russia in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and has even expelled Russian diplomats in the past.
