Following a declaration by Hamas, the radical Islamist group, signaling a willingness to release Israeli hostages and engage in discussions regarding the peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump, Franziska Brantner, co-chair of the Green Party, has urged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to actively promote peace in the region.
Brantner, speaking to publications within the Funke-Mediengruppe, acknowledged the need for continued caution, describing Hamas’s shift in position as “a necessary first and important step towards peace”. She emphasized that subsequent actions should include Hamas’s unconditional surrender and complete disarmament.
Alongside these requirements for Hamas, Brantner stressed the importance of reciprocal action from the Israeli government, specifically the removal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. She reiterated the commitment to a two-state solution as a vital objective, calling on Chancellor Merz to prioritize this goal and shift from a previously perceived passive approach.
Brantner asserted that the two-state solution remains a crucial guarantee for the security of both Israelis and Palestinians, alongside offering a foundation for enduring peace in the region.
