AfD Surpasses CDU in Latest Polls

A recent survey indicates a continued shift in voter preferences within Germany, with the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) experiencing a notable increase in support. According to data released by the Institut Insa and reported by Bild, the AfD now leads in voter favor, surpassing the combined support of the traditional center-right Union parties.

The latest polling suggests that, were a federal election to be held this Sunday, the AfD would secure 26% of the vote, a marginal increase from the previous week. Union parties currently stand at 24.5%, representing a decrease of one percentage point. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains at 14.5%, contributing to a combined total of 39% for Union and SPD.

The Green Party is currently polling at 11%, while the Left Party has seen a slight increase, now at 11.5%. Both the BSW and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) remain below the 5% threshold, currently at 4% and 3.5% respectively.

Hermann Binkert, head of Institut Insa, commented on the findings, noting the challenge facing Union leader Friedrich Merz in reversing the current trend, while acknowledging that Olaf Scholz has not been able to do so. The survey, commissioned by Bild, was conducted between September 19th and 22nd, 2024 and encompassed responses from 2,002 citizens.
