Klingbeil Confident of Union Support for Judge

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) anticipates a favorable outcome regarding the upcoming Federal Constitutional Court judge election, with a strong expectation of support from the center-right Union faction. SPD leader Lars Klingbeil expressed confidence in a recent interview with several German news outlets, stating his belief that the Union will uphold its commitments on the matter.

The nomination follows the withdrawal of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, prompting the SPD to put forward Sigrid Emmenegger, currently a judge at the Federal Administrative Court, as their candidate. Klingbeil emphasized the suitability of Emmenegger, highlighting her demonstrated qualifications and professional standing and cautioned against any deviation from prior agreements. He underscored the importance of a consistent approach from the Union in this crucial appointment process. The election is scheduled for next week.
