Bundeswehr Leader Slams Defense Ministry's New Capability Profile As Insufficient

André Wüstner, the chairman of the German Armed Forces association, stated that the capability profile for the Bundeswehr, presented by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) on Wednesday, is insufficient. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Wüstner acknowledged that it is positive to finally have such a profile, but emphasized that the Bundeswehr is awaiting a more concrete end-state structure derived from NATO commitments. He argued that this structure is necessary to determine and realize the immediate needs regarding infrastructure, material, and, critically, personnel for the coming years. Wüstner further pointed out that SACEuro, the NATO military commander, needs to know which maneuver elements will be available for his defense planning and from when. Similarly, inspectors and commanders must have clarity regarding the framework within which they can structurally organize their units over time. Finally, Wüstner stressed that Parliament, in compliance with the Basic Law, needs to be informed about the target structure for which funding for the Bundeswehr will be allocated.
