German airports are calling for enhanced protection against unauthorized drone activity, emphasizing the critical link between ground-level security and aviation safety. Ralph Beisel, CEO of the German Airport Association (ADV), stated that while airports are actively contributing within the bounds of current legislation, the ultimate responsibility for drone detection and countermeasures resides with the state. He urged a cessation of debates surrounding jurisdictional responsibilities and a government-funded rollout of effective detection systems across airport locations.
The call for heightened security follows growing concerns about the potential for drone misuse and the need to safeguard airport operations. The ADV’s appeal reflects a desire for a streamlined approach and dedicated resources to address the evolving threat.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt echoed the need for action, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster drone defense through closer collaboration between the federal government and states. He confirmed competency consolidation and the development of new defensive capabilities are underway. Dobrindt characterized the current situation as a “technological race” between the proliferation of drones and the advancement of counter-drone technology, underscoring the importance of investing in updated defensive technologies to mitigate potential drone-related incidents.
