Tennet Urges Faster Power Plant Strategy

Tennet Urges Faster Power Plant Strategy

Transmission network operator Tennet has urged for accelerated progress following the release of the latest Energiewende Monitoring report.

Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” Tennet CEO Tim Meyerjürgens emphasized the need for prompt political decisions and legislative frameworks. He specifically cited the urgency of a power plant strategy, a review of the network connection process for storage facilities, data centers and power plants and the confirmation of the federal needs assessment law.

The call for action follows the presentation of a long-awaited report by Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) on Monday. The report projects lower electricity demand in the coming years than previously estimated. Meyerjürgens acknowledged the findings, stating that the monitoring report reinforces the necessity of jointly planning and developing grids, renewable energy sources and flexibility solutions. He argued that this integrated approach is crucial for a realistic, efficient and secure energy transition that balances supply security, affordability and climate protection goals.

Minister Reiche and the government now face responsibilities including facilitating the grid-supportive deployment of energy storage, improving the utilization of existing grid capacity, optimizing connections for offshore wind farms and consistently leveraging overhead power lines. Implementing these measures is expected to enhance the overall system’s efficiency and potentially reduce associated costs.
