A recent survey conducted by Bitkom Research reveals a significant appetite for autonomous transportation among German citizens. The poll, based on responses from 1,004 individuals aged 16 and over, indicates that a remarkable 99 percent would be willing to utilize at least one form of autonomous vehicle.

The survey highlights particular enthusiasm for public transit options. A substantial 72 percent expressed a willingness to use driverless U- or S-Bahn trains, followed closely by 70 percent for autonomous buses and 68 percent for mini- or shuttle buses. Interest extends to personal vehicles, with 57 percent open to using an autonomous private car and 56 percent considering autonomous taxis. Intercity travel also demonstrates viability, as 44 percent would utilize an autonomous regional or long-distance train. A noteworthy 34 percent indicated a willingness to travel on autonomous ships, while 27 percent expressed interest in autonomous aircraft.

However, opinions are divided concerning the long-term impact of autonomous driving. While 53 percent believe it will become the standard in the future, 43 percent view it as an overhyped trend.

Overall, 86 percent of Germans perceive digitalization as an opportunity for advancement in mobility. This underscores the critical need for Germany’s automotive industry to embrace digital innovation; 78 percent are convinced it’s essential for maintaining competitiveness. Almost as many (77 percent) foresee collaborations with technology companies as indispensable in the international market. Interestingly, 50 percent believe the German automotive sector should focus again on its core strengths and values.

The survey was conducted via telephone between July 1st and July 31, 2025 and included 736 respondents who own at least one vehicle in their household.
