German Government Cautious On Election Reform Proposal

Berlin – The German federal government has offered a reserved response to a new electoral reform proposal put forward by Vice President of the Bundestag, Omid Nouripour

Responding to inquiries from the dts news agency in Berlin on Monday, Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Hille stated that the comments originated within the parliamentary sphere He emphasized that such matters are subjects for debate and decision within the parliament itself and indicated he would refrain from commenting on the proposal in his capacity as government spokesperson

Nouripour’s suggestion centers around consolidating federal, state and local elections into two dates, coupled with a five-year legislative term across all levels of government He argued that the current close proximity of election campaigns in Germany leaves both politicians and party headquarters “completely breathless” His vision involves holding federal and local elections on the same day, followed by all state elections halfway through the federal legislative period This would entail extending the federal legislative term from four to five years
