German retail turnover experienced a decline in July 2025, according to data released Friday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Seasonally and calendar-adjusted, retail sales decreased by 1.5 percent compared to June 2025. In nominal terms, the decrease was 1.0 percent.
However, when compared to July 2024, retail turnover rose by 1.9 percent in real terms and 3.1 percent nominally. Revised figures indicate that retail sales saw a real increase of 1.0 percent and a nominal increase of 0.8 percent in June 2025 compared to May 2025.
Food retail experienced a decline in July, with real sales falling by 1.8 percent and nominal sales by 1.2 percent compared to the previous month. Year-on-year, food retail turnover increased by 0.1 percent in real terms and 2.8 percent nominally.
Non-food retail also saw a decrease in July, with a seasonally and calendar-adjusted real decline of 0.7 percent and a nominal decrease of 0.5 percent. Compared to July 2024, non-food retail sales grew by 3.5 percent in real terms and 4.2 percent nominally.
The e-commerce sector experienced a downturn in July, with real sales falling by 3.8 percent and nominal sales by 3.1 percent. However, compared to July 2024, online retail turnover increased significantly, growing by 13.8 percent in real terms and 14.1 percent nominally, according to Destatis.
