The man driving an SUV through a crowd in Leipzig’s city center has been apprehended by police. Authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate threat. Local radio station “Radio Leipzig” earlier reported that the driver was allegedly a German man, aged between 30 and 40, described as having many tattoos and appearing confused.
While the background details of the suspect were initially unclear, the sequence of events began around 5 PM when the vehicle reportedly entered from Augustusplatz onto Grimmaische Straße, before speeding towards the market area.
Regarding the overall incident, emergency services have since reported a total of two fatalities and two seriously injured individuals, with approximately 20 other people also affected. The response was massive, involving 80 aid workers from the fire department and ambulance service, alongside two helicopters. Police established a wide perimeter around the scene with additional operational teams.
