Trump and Zelenskyy project unity at White House meeting

During a meeting at the White House on Monday, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a markedly harmonious front.

The encounter stood in contrast to a previous, strained meeting in late February. Trump refrained from verbal criticism, even when prompted by attending journalists. Zelenskyy, for his part, repeatedly emphasized his gratitude for US support. The previous meeting saw US Vice President JD Vance, who remained silent throughout this current discussion, suggest Zelenskyy had not adequately expressed his thanks.

During that earlier visit, Zelenskyy also faced commentary regarding his attire. He was questioned about owning a suit, given his customary military-style clothing since the onset of the conflict. This time, Zelenskyy wore a black suit, which drew explicit praise from Trump.

Substantively, Trump largely reiterated his recent positions. He announced that a trilateral meeting is expected soon, contingent on positive discussions with European counterparts. Following these conversations, he intends to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump stated his desire for a “long-lasting peace” not one that would falter after a couple of years.

Responding to questions regarding specific security guarantees for Ukraine, including potential troop deployment, Trump offered a reserved response. He indicated the public would be informed following meetings with visiting European leaders, suggesting a primary role for Europe while affirming US involvement – the extent of which remains undefined. Trump also expressed the belief that both Putin and Zelenskyy share a desire to end the conflict – a position that contrasts with accusations leveled at Zelenskyy six months prior, in which he was accused of “playing with World War III”.
