North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister of the Interior, Herbert Reul (CDU), expressed deep concern regarding the possibility of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) participating in the government of Saxony-Anhalt. In speaking to the “Handelsblatt”, the CDU politician stated, “A party that harbors right-extremist thoughts in parts and openly positions itself as pro-Russia represents a significant risk to internal and external security”. Reul emphasized that in a time when Russia is jeopardizing German safety through espionage and hybrid attacks, having political forces with an unsafe proximity to this actor in government would constitute a major security risk.
Looking ahead to the state election scheduled for this autumn in Saxony-Anhalt, Reul addressed the electoral landscape, calling it another political barometer. He encouraged voters to weigh their choices carefully and understand the weight of their individual vote. “Simple answers are no good solutions for complex problems” according to Reul.
Contextually, the state of Saxony-Anhalt is currently governed by a coalition consisting of the CDU, SPD, and FDP. However, polling indicates a shifting political climate. A recent survey conducted by the Institute Infratest for the “Magdeburger Volksstimme”, the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, and MDR placed the AfD in the lead with 41 percent. This figure represents an increasing gap compared to the CDU, which registered 26 percent. The state parliament is scheduled to elect new representatives in September.
