Following the recent Alaska summit and telephone conversations between US President Donald Trump and European leaders, Jürgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has expressed cautious optimism.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Monday, Hardt stated that the meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Selenskyj “will be recorded in the history books” potentially marking either the beginning of a genuine peace process or a turning point where European nations would be compelled to act independently.
The CDU foreign policy expert highlighted increasing grounds for a positive outlook, citing statements made by Chancellor Merz and other government leaders suggesting a sustained commitment from President Trump to peace efforts. He noted the perceived expectation, even following negotiations, of a guarantor role for the United States.
Hardt also emphasized European unity under the Chancellor’s leadership, asserting that Selenskyj and Trump are aware the Ukrainian President does not speak for himself alone and that Ukraine is not fighting in isolation.
