Gladbach Signs Japanese Star Machino

Borussia Mönchengladbach has secured the services of attacking player Shuto Machino from Holstein Kiel, the Bundesliga club announced on Saturday. The 25-year-old Japanese international has signed a contract with the Foals running until June 30, 2029.

“Shuto is a versatile forward who can be deployed in various attacking positions, giving us a number of possibilities” commented Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Sporting Director, Roland Virkus. “He proved last season that he’s capable of scoring double figures in the Bundesliga, which is why we’re very pleased he has chosen Borussia.

Machino enjoyed a successful stint with Holstein Kiel, netting eleven goals in thirty-two Bundesliga appearances. “I really wanted to move to Borussia and I’m very happy that the transfer went through” Machino stated. “Now, I want to do everything I can to help the team as quickly as possible.

Prior to his move to Europe in the summer of 2023, Machino played in his native Japan from 2018 to 2023, accumulating 159 appearances and scoring 46 goals across all competitions. His arrival at Holstein Kiel immediately established him as a key player, contributing five goals and six assists in 31 matches, playing a central role in the club’s historic promotion to the Bundesliga.

Machino continued to demonstrate his scoring prowess in the top flight, registering eleven goals and providing three assists in the recently concluded season, including a memorable double against his now-employer.

On the international stage, Machino has represented Japan’s senior national team eight times, scoring four goals. He made his debut on July 19, 2022, with a brace in a 6-0 victory against Hong Kong and was part of the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although he did not feature in any matches.
