The German market index, the DAX, maintained its gains on Wednesday, staying positive throughout the day, including up to midday. At 9:30 a.m., the leading index was calculated at approximately 24,105 points, representing a rise of 0.6 percent compared to the previous day’s closing levels. Leading the gains were shares in Merck, Scout 24, and Infineon, while the weakest stocks included GEA, Fresenius, and Rheinmetall.
According to Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, trading volume remained thin across the DAX despite recent geopolitical events and quarterly earnings releases. He noted that investors are maintaining caution, awaiting clearer signals regarding peace negotiations in the Middle East. The analyst observed that only the quarterly reports of the DAX corporations were significantly influencing individual stock prices. Merck was highlighted as the leading winner, with shares able to increase by over eight percent at times. Other companies, including Eon, Deutsche Telekom, and Allianz, also saw positive reactions.
Conversely, Rheinmetall finished the period at the bottom, with the analyst suggesting that the growth story associated with the defense conglomerate appears to be slowing down, leading investors to seek opportunities in more promising sectors. Despite this, semiconductor stocks remain of interest, allowing Infineon to advance on the winner’s list. The day’s data on industrial production and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the Eurozone were reported as slightly below expectations.
In other international markets, the Euro weakened on the afternoon of Wednesday. The exchange rate stood at 1.1706 US dollars per Euro, meaning the dollar could be acquired for 0.8543 Euros.
Commodity prices also showed weakness. Gold prices declined, with a fine ounce trading at $4,705 in the afternoon-a drop of 0.2 percent. This equated to 129.23 Euros per gram. Oil prices fell, with Nordsee Brent crude oil futures costing $107.30 at noon German time. This represented a decrease of 48 cents, or 0.5 percent, compared to the previous trading close.
