The German government has announced its willingness to offer support to the Syrian government, aligning with European partners to actively promote an “inclusive political process” that ensures representation for all Syrian citizens.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the Syrian government’s responsibility to protect its citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic background, from violence. He expressed deep concern regarding the escalating situation in southern Syria, specifically referencing the devastating civilian casualties resulting from recent clashes in the Suweida province. The attacks targeting the Druze minority community were condemned in the strongest terms, with a call for those responsible to be held accountable.
While the cessation of hostilities is viewed as a positive development, Minister Wadephul stressed the critical importance of all parties adhering to the agreement and halting all military actions. He cautioned against Syria becoming a battleground for regional tensions.
Referring to recent Israeli airstrikes, including those impacting Damascus, Wadephul urged all domestic and international actors to refrain from any actions that could jeopardize the stability of Syria and its ongoing transition. The overarching aim, he stated, is to foster a peaceful and representative future for the Syrian people.
