Bundestag Deputy Speaker Omid Nouripour has urged the German government to use the upcoming EU summit in Cyprus to champion significantly stronger diplomatic initiatives regarding the conflict in Iran. Nouripour stated in interviews with RTL and ntv that the Europeans need to create a clear plan and establish a visible commitment-a “flag”-that shows their readiness to actively pursue progress.
He contrasted the current European approach with models like the dialogue platform offered by Pakistan, which assists the conflicting parties in Islamabad. Nouripour criticized the multinational response, suggesting that “the Europeans are merely acting like ping-pong referees, watching the balls fly across the net, instead of proposing their own suggestions”.
According to the Green Party politician, for the EU to be effective, member nations must communicate more deeply. The discussion, he argues, should move beyond simply lamenting the current dire situation and instead focus strategically on specific initiatives that will ensure their concerns are heard. Nouripour firmly stated, “We have not been heard so far”.
He highlighted the urgent need for increased physical engagement, insisting that one cannot garner solidarity or diplomatic favors without being present on the ground. In his view, effective diplomacy requires persistent effort, as he concluded, “Diplomacy is: talking, talking, talking, until an outcome is achieved”.
