CDU Lawmaker Demands Coronavirus Inquiry

A member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the German Bundestag is advocating for the swift establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee to examine the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Saskia Ludwig, representing the state of Brandenburg, is among the first CDU representatives to publicly push for such a body.

Ludwig argued that the pandemic has been a central and defining topic in recent political discourse, especially during electoral campaigns and that a comprehensive investigation is now necessary. She specifically called on parties that have previously downplayed the significance of the crisis to actively support its creation.

Her call comes despite the potential scrutiny it could place on high-profile figures within her own party, including CDU Health Policy Spokesperson Jens Spahn. Ludwig emphasized the need to move beyond partisan considerations, referencing recent controversies surrounding another politician as an example of unproductive political maneuvering.

She stressed that the inquiry should focus on accountability for past mistakes made during the pandemic and address perceived exclusions of specific population groups, referencing the term “pandemic of the unvaccinated”. Ludwig believes the creation of such a committee is crucial for rebuilding trust with citizens and restoring faith in the center of German politics.
