The debate surrounding potential reintroduction of compulsory military service in Germany needs to include the perspectives of young people, according to Kevin Gniosdorz, chairman of the Young Union in North Rhine-Westphalia (Junge Union NRW).
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Gniosdorz acknowledged the importance of ensuring Germany’s defense capabilities, stating that a return to compulsory service is generally considered a viable approach. However, he emphasized the need for a thorough and inclusive discussion, stressing, “It must be clear that if something like this is planned, it must be done together with young people and not over their heads.
Gniosdorz’s remarks also addressed concerns regarding escalating public debt. Expressing worry about the bipartisan opening of avenues for increased borrowing, he cautioned that future generations will ultimately bear the financial burden. He highlighted a widespread recognition within the Young Union of the longstanding neglect of vital infrastructure projects and criticised proposals to fully utilize relaxed debt regulations in the coming years, describing them as “fatal.
Gniosdorz is currently seeking re-election at the North Rhine-Westphalia Young Union regional gathering this weekend.
