Accommodation establishments in Germany recorded 47.5 million overnight stays in May 2025, encompassing both domestic and international guests. Provisional data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday indicates a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to May 2024.
Analysts suggest a contributing factor to this downturn may be the timing of Pentecost holidays this year. Several federal states shifted their May school holidays, typically occurring in May in 2024, to predominantly occur in June of 2025.
The number of overnight stays by German guests declined by 3.3 percent year-on-year, reaching 40.0 million. Conversely, overnight stays by international visitors increased by 1.5 percent, totaling 7.6 million.
Examining the period from January to May 2025, accommodation establishments across the country registered a cumulative 173.0 million overnight stays. This represents a slight decrease of 0.8 percent compared to the same period in 2024, considered a record year. Overnight stays by domestic tourists fell by 0.9 percent to 144.3 million, while international visitor stays decreased marginally by 0.3 percent to 28.7 million, according to Destatis.
