A recent opinion poll indicates a significant shift in German voter preferences, with the Left Party (Die Linke) experiencing a marked increase in support. According to a new trend analysis conducted by the Institute for Opinion Research (Insa) and reported by “Bild”, the Left Party now holds as much support as the Green Party.
The survey, conducted between July 4th and 7th, questioned 2,007 citizens and reveals that the Left Party would garner 11% of the vote in a hypothetical federal election held this Sunday. This represents a gain of 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous week. Conversely, the Green Party has seen a decline, losing 0.5 percentage points to also stand at 11%.
The Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) remains stable at 28%, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) holds steady at 23.5%. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has experienced a loss, dropping one percentage point to 14.5%.
Hermann Binkert, Head of Insa, stated that the current projected results place the CDU/CSU ahead, but see the potential for the Left Party and the Green Party to surpass the SPD and vie for the third-place position. He noted that both the Left Party and the Green Party possess considerable untapped potential, potentially exceeding 20% each, while the SPD is currently not realizing its potential of 24 percentage points.
