Yasmin Fahimi Re-elected Leader of German Trade Union Federation

Yasmin Fahimi has been re-elected as the chairwoman of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). During the DGB’s federal congress in Berlin, she secured the support of approximately 96 percent, with 37 delegates voting in favor, 15 registering dissenting votes, and three abstentions. There were no competing candidates in the election.

At the beginning of the four-day national congress, the DGB leader issued a warning against threats to the social safety net and workers’ rights. She sharply criticized efforts to undermine the eight-hour workday and dismantle existing social security systems. Fahimi pledged that the DGB would draw “clear red lines” when tackling current reform debates.

Fahimi previously served as the General Secretary of the SPD. She has held the chair of the DGB since May 2022, when she was initially elected with around 93 percent approval. Although the elections for the executive board are completed, the federal congress still features several high-profile political speeches. Key speakers scheduled include Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) on Monday evening, followed by a speech from Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) on Tuesday morning. The program concludes on Tuesday afternoon with a speech from Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD).
