Cologne Bans “Playground” Term

Cologne Bans "Playground" Term

The city of Cologne is set to redefine its public playgrounds, replacing the traditional term “Spielplatz” (playground) with “Spiel- und Aktionsfläche” (play and activity area). The change, slated for implementation this autumn, will necessitate the replacement of approximately 700 existing signs across the city, according to reports in the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”.

According to an internal administrative document, the shift reflects a commitment to a broader concept of inclusion, aiming to accommodate a more diverse range of users, considering factors such as age, cultural background and potential disabilities.

City officials argue that the new designation is more accurate, as the facilities are intended to cater to a wider spectrum of age groups and user needs. The term “Spielplatz” is considered too restrictive, they explain and the revised terminology better reflects the inclusive vision for these public spaces. The move signals a broader effort to ensure accessibility and cater to the diverse population of Cologne.
