Labor union IG Metall is advocating for an extension of job protection measures at Thyssenkrupp AG, as a foundational agreement safeguarding employees from widespread layoffs nears its expiration date at the end of the business year.
According to Jürgen Kerner, Deputy Chair of IG Metall and member of the Thyssenkrupp Supervisory Board, the union is actively working to ensure the continuation of this agreement and its associated regulations. Speaking to the “Rheinischen Post” Kerner emphasized the significance of the agreement, noting it currently impacts approximately 52,000 employees across Germany.
The potential absence of a renewed agreement raises concerns about the future of various locations and employee security. Kerner cautioned that a failure to reach a central-level agreement could necessitate addressing these issues on a site-by-site basis, a scenario he expressed a desire to avoid.
Representatives from Thyssenkrupp’s worker councils are convening this Monday at a company-wide Future Forum, setting the stage for crucial discussions surrounding the ongoing arrangements and the company’s strategic direction. The meeting is expected to be a key point in deciding the next steps for securing job protections and stability within the organization.
