Berlin, Germany – The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has concluded its three-day federal party convention in Berlin, marking the end of a series of discussions and votes.
In a closing statement, the newly elected SPD General Secretary, Tim Klüssendorf, emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation, stating that the party can achieve success again by working together. The delegates were encouraged to embark on a new path of progress, with Klüssendorf declaring, “Now it’s time to get started with the work. Now it’s time for the takeoff.”
The most significant agenda item, the re-election of the party leadership, took place on Friday. The outcome reflected the party’s dissatisfaction with the leadership’s response to the recent federal election, as Party Chairman Lars Klingbeil secured only 64.9 percent of the vote, while his co-leader Bärbel Bas received 95 percent approval and Klüssendorf over 90 percent.
On the second day, the party bid farewell to outgoing top officials of the previous legislative period and debated several proposals, including the planned increase in defense spending, which was ultimately approved. On the final day, the party demonstrated unity in a vote on a proposal to review a procedure for banning the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which was unanimously adopted by the delegates.
