Germany’s Parliamentary Control Group to Undergo Changes Ahead of Election
As the German parliament prepares to elect a new Parliamentary Control Group (PKGr), the Greens have expressed concerns over the planned reduction in the number of members. The group’s parliamentary manager, Irene Mihalic, told the Rheinische Post that the reduction is not welcome, citing the potential threat to the group’s working and decision-making capacity if more members are to leave.
The PKGr, responsible for overseeing the country’s intelligence agencies, is set to be downsized from 13 to nine members, following a proposal by the Union and SPD parties. With the two AfD candidates expected to be rejected and the election of the Left’s Heidi Reichinnek still uncertain, the actual size of the group may ultimately be even smaller.
The Bundestag will vote on the new composition of the group on Thursday, requiring a two-thirds majority of the PKGr members to be considered effective.
