In a warning to the international community, Sahra Wagenknecht, the chair of the Left Party in Germany, expressed deep concern over the potential escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, potentially leading to a third world war. In an interview with the German magazine “Stern”, Wagenknecht emphasized the catastrophic consequences of a US military intervention, stating that it would lead to further escalation and potentially devastating outcomes.
The politician also criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing him of discrediting himself with his inflammatory remarks about “dirty work” in Iran. Wagenknecht strongly condemned the idea of using military force to topple an unwanted regime, citing the failures of similar strategies in Iraq and Libya. She described such a strategy as “responsible for the destabilization of the region and the potential influx of a massive refugee stream to Germany, exceeding the numbers seen in 2015/16”.
Wagenknecht urged the German government to take immediate diplomatic action, alongside France and other European countries, to dissuade the US from intervening in the conflict. She emphasized the need for Germany to prioritize diplomacy and prevent the catastrophic consequences of a war in the region, which would have severe implications for the country’s migration crisis and overall security.
