Iran's Regime Change Must Come from Within, Not from the Outside

A former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, is convinced that a regime change in Iran must come from within the country.

In an interview with RTL and ntv, Heusgen emphasized that the current Mullah regime is one of the worst in the world, but that a change must be driven by the Iranian people themselves. “We must listen to the opposition and support them” he said. “A regime change imposed from the outside will not work.”

Heusgen, a former advisor to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, welcomed the diplomatic efforts of Germany, France, the UK, the EU and Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghtchi. “Everything is better than further war” he said. “We must do everything to achieve a diplomatic solution and it’s good that Europe is now speaking with the Iranians in Geneva.”

Regarding the possibility of US President Donald Trump adhering to any agreements reached in Geneva, Heusgen expressed uncertainty, stating that the decision will be made in the moment. However, he believes that Trump’s recent shift in stance might be due to the influence of his supporters, who want to withdraw the US from international commitments. “If he receives an offer from the Europeans and the Iranians that he can live with and then says, ‘Yes, I can sell this as a success,’ then we might have a chance” Heusgen said.
