German Parliamentarians Urge Halt to Deportations of Iranian Nationals Amid Escalating Conflict with Israel
Despite the escalating conflict between Germany and Israel, the country is still legally permitted to deport Iranian nationals back to their homeland. However, political opposition is growing against this practice, with members of the German parliament urging a halt to the deportations.
Hakan Demir, a member of the SPD’s parliamentary faction, has spoken out against the practice, saying, “Sending people into the war in Iran would be wrong. That’s why I welcome a deportation stop.” Members of the Green and Left parties in the German parliament have also called on the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees to refrain from deporting individuals to Iran.
In the current situation, the Green party’s Filiz Polat has appealed to the German government and the states to provide safety to Iranian nationals, stating, “We are calling on the federal government and the states to give Iranian nationals the necessary safety in this situation.”
Clara Bünger, a member of the Left party in the Bundestag, emphasized that Iran is not a safe country, particularly for opposition members who are now facing even greater focus from the regime, which is becoming even more brutal in its actions. “A deportation stop is legally and humanitarily imperative” she stressed.
A previous deportation stop for Iran expired at the end of 2023 and in the first quarter of 2025, Germany deported five individuals to Iran and returned 69 Iranian nationals to other EU countries under the Dublin regulation. Due to the conflict with Israel, the Iranian airspace is currently closed, making deportations from Germany currently impossible.
