German Housing Minister Verena Hubertz has expressed a desire to strengthen the enforcement of the rent brake, a measure aimed at curbing excessive rent increases in the country. In an interview with Bild, the SPD politician emphasized the need to take a firmer stance against violators of the rent brake, stating that those who intentionally circumvent the law can expect to face fines.
According to Hubertz, the current situation, where furnished apartments are being rented out at exorbitant prices, is not only frustrating but also poses a significant threat to the country’s housing market. She emphasized that the “Ikea-furnished studio apartment” scenario, where landlords attempt to bypass the rent brake by offering luxurious amenities, must be addressed.
The minister’s proposal to introduce fines for non-compliance with the rent brake is an attempt to combat this issue, with the aim of creating a more stable and affordable housing market.
