German Municipalities Demand 32 Billion Euro Emergency Aid From Federal Government

More than 50 local officials from various German cities and districts have issued an urgent appeal to the Federal Chancellor and other responsible authorities. The action coalition, “For the Dignity of Our Cities” has expressed deep concern over the dramatic financial situation of local municipalities and is demanding a net financial relief of 32 billion euros per year. The signatories, which include mayors, district commissioners, and other local leaders, point out that the ability of local governments to function is diminishing daily.

In their letter, the representatives detail specific issues, such as poorly maintained roads and school bathrooms that require renovation. They emphasize that the financial distress faced by these communities has wider societal consequences. Specifically, they point to a discernible link between the financial struggles of the municipalities and the rise of populist and extremist groups.

The action coalition, “For the Dignity of Our Cities” comprised of 73 municipalities across eight federal states, is calling for immediate financial assistance from both the federal and state governments. According to the coalition, local governments are structurally underfunded, a problem evidenced by a deficit of 31.9 billion euros in the previous year. They stress that this financial support is absolutely necessary for local authorities to carry out their essential day-to-day tasks.
