A German court has sentenced a 40-year-old Syrian man to life in prison for crimes against humanity and murder. The former doctor, according to the court, tortured patients and killed two of them in Syria between 2011 and 2012.
The accused, a former military hospital doctor in Homs, allegedly mistreated regime opponents, including setting the genitalia of two victims on fire with disinfectant and performing operations without anesthesia. In two cases, he administered lethal medication or killed through an injection.
The court viewed the acts as part of systematic violence by the Assad regime against the civilian population. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered a security detention, deeming the man a dangerous individual. The verdict is not yet final (June 16, 2025, Case No.: 5 – 3 StE 2/21-4 – 2/21).
