German statistics agency reveals growing trend of same-sex families with children in the country.
According to the preliminary results of the Microcensus 2024, released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Tuesday, there were approximately 31,000 same-sex couples in Germany with children in 2024. This represents a notable trend, as 50,000 children lived in these so-called “rainbow families”.
In total, there were around 8.4 million families with minor children in Germany in 2024, with roughly one in 200 of these families being a same-sex couple. Of the 22,000 same-sex female couples, about 70% and the 9,000 same-sex male couples, around 30%, had children under the age of 18 living with them.
When a broader family definition is applied, encompassing same-sex couples with adult children, the number of “rainbow families” in Germany increases to approximately 38,000, with 62,000 minor or adult children living with them.
