Greens Demand Legal Action Transforming Sex and Divorce Law Now

The Green Party is calling upon Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) to translate her announcements regarding reforms to both sexual criminal law and divorce law into concrete legislation.

Lena Gumnior, the Greens’ Chairwoman in the Committee for Law and Consumer Protection, told the “Rheinische Post” that Minister Hubig frequently makes announcements. Regarding the criminalization of sexual acts, the Greens have already debated a comprehensive “No-Ja-means-No” regulation within the Bundestag. This measure, which makes sexual activity criminal if consent was not actively given, is supported by the coalition, mirroring the support given by Green members of the European Parliament.

Additionally, Hubig recently proposed an amendment to divorce law that would allow couples to waive the mandatory waiting period when facing domestic violence. Helge Limburg, the Green Party’s policy spokesperson, welcomed this initial proposal in principle. Limburg told the “Rheinische Post” that an individual who repeatedly or structurally commits violence against their partner has effectively already left the marriage. While he advocates for the constructive review of the related draft law, he emphasized that the proposed legislation must be presented quickly. The Green politician highlighted that currently, a significant time gap exists between policy announcements and the actual drafting of legislation.
