Can Germany's New Minister Keep Up?

The new Digital Minister, Karsten Wildberger, views the digitalization of the country as a significant challenge, but also a historic opportunity.

In an interview with RTL and ntv, Wildberger expressed his enthusiasm for the task, stating that the people he has met in the ministry are highly motivated to work together. Despite a higher salary in the private sector, he did not hesitate to accept the role in politics, citing a sense of responsibility and the opportunity to make a difference in the country’s digital transformation.

Wildberger’s primary objectives are to accelerate the modernization of the state and make digital government services more user-friendly for citizens. He emphasized the importance of enabling citizens to better navigate the digital landscape, stating that this is the most crucial aspect of the state’s digital transformation.

The minister also highlighted the need to modernize the federal government’s IT infrastructure, assuring that concrete steps are being taken in this regard. In response to concerns about the lack of digitalization in some ministries, where fax machines are still in use, Wildberger reported that he has not seen a fax machine in his own ministry.

Wildberger further emphasized the importance of showcasing successful digital initiatives from the federal states and making them accessible nationwide. This is a key focus area for the minister, who views the digitalization of the country as a historic opportunity to drive positive change.
