Record Number of Large Company Startups in Germany's First Quarter

In the first quarter of 2025, the number of newly established businesses in Germany with a significant economic importance increased. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there were approximately 36,500 such businesses, representing a 11.4% increase compared to the first quarter of 2024. At the same time, the number of complete tasks for businesses with greater economic significance also rose by 10.0% to around 30,200.

The total number of new business registrations, including both the establishment of new businesses and the takeover of existing ones, increased by 2.9% to approximately 171,500 in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in the previous year. The overall number of business registrations increased by 2.1% to around 206,100.

The complete tasks for businesses, which include not only new business registrations but also takeovers, transformations and relocations to other regions, increased by 4.0% to approximately 142,300 in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in the previous year. The total number of business closures increased by 2.7% to approximately 175,000. This includes not only business closures but also takeovers, transformations, or relocations to other regions, according to the statisticians.
