Former German Ambassador to the USA, Wolfgang Ischinger, believes that US Vice President JD Vance is on his way to running for the presidency in the next US election. Ischinger, who chairs the Munich Security Conference’s board of trustees, discussed the matter with Vance during a panel discussion at the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington. Ischinger also sees a shift in mood in Washington, stating that the worst of the foreign policy confrontation may be over. He believes that there is now a willingness to align more closely with European partners, support their efforts and expect European support for American initiatives. Ischinger believes that this shift is due to the realization that the negotiation strategy with Ukraine and Russia has failed and that Trump’s charm and attempts to woo Putin have not brought about any breakthroughs.
