The Heidelberg-based AI company, Aleph Alpha, is set to join the Canadian firm Cohere. This merger was confirmed on Friday by German Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) during a joint press conference held alongside corporate representatives and Canadian AI Minister Evan Solomon. Wildberger publicly stated his strong support for the union, while Solomon thanked both nations for their diplomatic efforts.
Following months of negotiations-first reported on by the “Handelsblatt”-an agreement has finally been reached for the two companies to form a joint venture. According to the “Handelsblatt”, the ownership structure will grant the stakeholders of Cohere approximately 90% of the shares, with the remaining ten percent allocated to Aleph Alpha. This split is believed to reflect the revenue ratio of both companies.
The strategic goal of the newly combined entity is to position itself as a comprehensive alternative to US technology giants. Together, Cohere and Aleph Alpha plan to offer advanced artificial intelligence (AI) services to businesses and government agencies.
