30 Percent Surge in Parliamentary Offenses

The number of crimes in the German Bundestag has risen by almost 30 percent in recent years, according to the latest crime statistics reported by the news magazine Politico (Friday edition).

According to the statistics, a total of 419 crimes were recorded in the parliamentary buildings in Berlin last year, compared to 326 in 2023. The Bundestag administration confirmed to the magazine that the increase was mainly due to higher case numbers for offenses against the weapons law, defamation and property damage.

The statistics do not allow conclusions about the identities of the suspects, whether they were members of parliament, staff, visitors, or employees of external service providers. Offenses against the weapons law include carrying knives or firearms without authorization. In 2024, there were 251 cases in this category, 80 more than the previous year.

The statistics show a decline in cannabis-related offenses – there were only 16 crimes in the Bundestag last year, compared to 45 cases in 2023. According to the parliamentary administration, the reason for this decline is due to legislation passed in 2024 on the controlled use of cannabis.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) supports a legal basis for the work of the Bundestag police. The aim is to ensure the security of the parliament and, if necessary, to increase it further. The goal is to keep the Bundestag “open and safe.”
