The Greens have sharply criticized the plans of the Union to increase border controls in Germany. “Dobrindt and Merz’s border control policy is neither practically feasible nor legally secure to implement. With their image of closed borders, they are fostering expectations that are hardly achievable” said Marcel Emmerich, the spokesperson of the Green Party’s parliamentary group, to the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition) regarding the designated Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and the designated Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU).
Currently, the border controls are “ineffective” as the Federal Police is not adequately equipped to “close” almost 4,000 kilometers of border, according to the Green politician.
“Already now, they are violating EU law. While Germany, under Adenauer, Kohl and Merkel, was still the driving force behind European integration, Schwarz-Rot (Black-Yellow) is adopting right-wing populist narratives and promoting the isolation of the heart of Europe. Polarization in the country will not be reduced by more symbolic politics and chaos, but by pragmatic, human rights-oriented and European approaches” Emmerich continued.
