Alexander Dobrindt, the upcoming Federal Minister of the Interior, will issue a directive for increased border controls on Wednesday. This was announced by Dobrindt in the “Berlin Report” of ARD. “The numbers are still too high” said Dobrindt. The border controls will be ramped up, which will also increase the number of refusals of illegally entering migrants.
When asked about the refusals of asylum seekers, Dobrindt said that it will only be done in certain groups. “We will also carry out refusals in this regard, but this will not be done with vulnerable groups.” Regarding the refusals, he is in talks with neighboring countries. “This will be a process that does not overwhelm neighboring countries but sends a clear signal that the policy in Germany has changed.”
Dobrindt opposes a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD). “I believe that the AfD should not be banned, but we need to get rid of them.” To do this, one must talk about the topics that the AfD made famous, including irregular migration. Dobrindt does not expect the AfD to be able to appoint chairpersons of committees in the German Bundestag. This would require majorities. “I will not recommend our members to vote for the AfD as chairpersons of committees. That will be difficult for them.”
Dobrindt has been named as the upcoming Federal Minister of the Interior by the CSU. After the planned election of Friedrich Merz (CDU) as the new Federal Chancellor on Tuesday, Dobrindt is expected to be sworn in as the Interior Minister.
